My Metropolitan Museum lecture this week was on Gustave Courbet’s retrospective on view through May 18th. We toured the exhibition while discussing Courbet’s unique brand of Realism, from his large canvases of country dwellers from the Franche-Compte region of France to his provocative Parisian picknickers and nude beauties. We also looked at the artist’s many self portraits and examined how he portrayed himself through the years.
